Lite-On Slim USB Powered External DVD Burner

By , May 27, 2010 2:41 am

Here we have the Lite-on Slim USB Powered External DVD Burner.  There are 2 types here one is top load and the other is your standard tray load.

Both are great options as an external DVD burner.  Both are small and lightweight and both are usb powered which is a must these days as no one wants to be carrying around a bulky power supply.  You can see them featured in the video below however the video features the top loading dvd reader only (not burner) however the burner looks exactly the same except it has DVD writing function.  So the video should allow you to decide which you prefer.

They both write at 8x and both have lightscribe feature enabling you to write or label your DVDs directly (no need for the nasty permanent marker).  Both models are available in both black and white, however the tray load model also has a red version if you prefer.

So the only main differences between the DVD Burners below are the colour and the shape style i.e. tray load or top load.  The prices are pretty much the same for all the models.  Please click on the image of the model you like for the current pricing.

How To Build Your Own External DVD Burner

By , May 27, 2010 2:06 am

Below is a short and simple video that shows how you can build your own external DVD burner.  This can sometimes save you money but in reality most external burners these days cost less than the cost of an external case and internal burner.

The one main advantage to building your own external burner is that the external case required to make one is very flexible in that you could put a hard drive in there and have an external hard drive as well.  One case does all so it’s useful in that way.

Then again perhaps you just want to impress your friends by telling them you built it yourself.  Whatever your reason you will find the video below informative.

External DVD Burners

By , May 16, 2010 6:08 am

So you are looking for an External DVD Burner.  Possibly because you have a laptop and you want an easy way to add this device via USB because installing an internal DVD Burner into a laptop can be pricey.  Or perhaps you have a desktop and you don’t want to go to the trouble of opening up the case and installing and internal DVD burner.

Another big problem these days is the very popular Netbooks that are on the market.  These are very small, lightweight notebooks.  They can be small and light because they lack an optical drive which is almost like selling a car without a trunk.  While a CD or DVD isn’t required all the time, it is necessary some of the time and that’s when we need an external optical drive.

Whatever your situation a DVD Burner makes a highly useful addition to your Computer or Laptop.  CD Burners just don’t cut it anymore with the large amounts of data we are handling these days.  Most DVDs can hold about 6GB worth of data which is almost 10x that of a CD-R, and the cost of blank DVDs isn’t much different from blank CD-Rs.

Further, most computers have a DVD reader, so whatever data is saved onto the DVD can be easily read in almost any computer making it a very versatile way to easily transfer data from one PC to another.

External DVD Burners are usually USB connection so make sure you have a free USB port before you buy.  If all your USB ports are used up you could just buy a USB Hub which will give you some more ports.  These days we can’t have enough USB ports.

Some External DVD Burners have lightscribe feature.  This enables you to actually print or write info directly onto the DVD.  Before we just used a black permanent marker but now for an extra few dollars and the right blank DVD style you can just let the burner do the labelling for you.

The speeds of DVD Burners can vary too.  The higher the speed the faster it can write to the DVD.  Keep in mind however the blank DVD must be able to take that speed.  ie an 8x DVD-R will only be able to be written at 8x even if your DVD Burner is able to write at 24x.

Some of the most famous brands are LG Goldstar, Sony, Philips, HP, Samsung etc.  There are many other not so well known brands too which can save you some money.  So shop around and ask your friends what they use.
